Winter is the perfect tie to get cozy, feel and enjoy the beauty of the season. We are enjoying summer warmth only because of Winter!!  An unique season for Celebrations. Christmas, New year, Pongal etc.. most of the celebrations are happening during Winter. Similarly majority of health issues we should aware during this season and should take necessary steps to handle this seasonal health issues. Lets see important things to take care of wellness in this winter. Winter Health wellness and tips!!

Winter Health wellness and tips…

1.Winter Blue:

It is otherwise called Seasonal affective Disorder {SAD}.It is a type of depression that occurs during winter season.

Signs & symptoms :

  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Lack of Interest in social activities or gatherings
  • Over eating, craving for sugary foods, pasta, pizza which ends in weight gain
  • Sleeping too much ends with sleep disturbances
  • Difficulty in concentration
  • Hopelessness, Worthlessness or Guilty feeling
  • Heightened Anxiety
  • Suicidal thoughts

Cause:

Body responses to  Daylight and Sunlight. Melatonin is a hormone produced by pineal gland which usually secreted during night or darkness and it is related with Sleep-wake cycle. Due to prolongation of darkness during winter, Melatonin secretion increased which causes Lethargy and symptoms of depression.

  • Exposure to Sunlight
  • Active Exercise
  • Meditation
  • Seek professional Help- Nothing wrong in it.

2.Joint Pain {Arthritis}:

  • Lack of Vitamin D
  • Barometric pressure can cause tissue to swell, putting pain on joints.

3.Cardiovascular Risk:

“Heart Attack” precipitated during this season due to Vasoconstriction caused by Coldness. Blood vessels tend to narrow in the process of Vasoconstriction which may leads to Heart Attack

  • Wear Warm Coat, gloves & Hat.
  • Avoid Heavy exercises like weight lifting, those who are having predisposing health issues.
  • Walking

4.Infectious illness & Asthma:

Infectious illnesses are Common cold, Flu, Pneumonia, Sore throat, Strep Throat.

It is not due to Cold weather. It is purely because of Poor indoor air Quality. Because of outside cold weather, people used to spend majority of time inside the home by closing all doors in the way of seeking warmth which results poor air quality and thus paves the way for infection.

Inadequate cleaning and washing of Sofas,  bed sheets & carpets.

  • Open the Windows during Day time
  • Sit near Window
  • Deep Cleaning & changing the carpets, Bed sheets are vital
  • Breathing exercises
  • Walking
  • Seek professional help

 

5.Frostbite & Hypothermia:

It is an injury of the skin and underlying tissues caused by freezing of your skin due to coldness. First your skin becomes Very cold and red , then numb, hard and pale which may end in Blistering in extreme cases. Hypothermia associates.

  • Confusion
  • Slurred  Speech
  • Extreme drowsiness
  • Loss of Memory
  • Exhaustion
  • Fumbling Hands.

  • Limit your time in cold wet windy weather
  • Wear a hat or Head or ear band that should completely cover your ears
  • Clothing should not be too tight, should be loose warm clothing, similarly fitted socks & gloves. Avoid tight clothing.
  • Avoid Alcohol when you are going out because alcoholic beverages cause your body to lose heat faster.
  • Stay Hydrated
  • Walking

6.Skin & Hair Problems:

You may experience dry itchy skin which tend to peel, sometimes bleeds too. Another important problem is Hair fall.

This is mainly because of low water intake and high carbohydrates.

  • Take Green vegetables and fruits
  • Apply Moisturizer. Best one is applying coconut oil, it suits to all and to every skin types.

Coconut oil never darkens the skin, instead it makes your skin and hair more shiny.

In General,

All the symptoms are because of non-mobility, non-exposure of sunlight, over exposure of cold and improper diet.

So do Walking with cautionary covering of the body, focus balanced diet and stay Hydrated.
