Neuroplasticity – Influences on Health & Habit

How your Environment influence you!! What is Neuroplasticity & its health aspect?

Our parents and teachers used to tell that not to speak with certain group of people, not to be in certain gangs and insisted us to follow moral standards like speaking the truth, practicing compassion and Gratitude, Spreading love, Honesty etc. {Neuroplasticity effect oh Health & Habit}

Why they keep on stressing the same point?!

Why they always afraid about us?!!

Why they are always doing things carefully in and around us?!

Because,

They don’t want us to habituate certain substandard things. If we keep on exposing to certain facts, we will become a part of it. Neuroplasticity & health.

What is Neuroplasticity?

Neuroplasticity is ability of the brain to adapt to change in an individual environment by forming neural connections over time. People used to believe that the brain became fixed after certain age, but research revealed that brain never stops changing in response to learning

So, there is no age for you to master new skills!!

Neuroplasticity & Child’s Emotional Health:

Have you seen, young people who can experience a traumatizing event have restriction in their Emotional development? Eg. They won’t express their emotions and they always dull & silent.

It is because of disturbances in neural channels. Development of brain in childhood lays the foundation for all future development. Neural pathways formation is totally depend on the repetition of experiences. These experiences teach the brain to react and respond.

So during traumatic experiences, neural pathways getting the most use in response to trauma and this reduces the formation of other pathways needed for adaptive behavior.

This leads to

  • Disruptive attachment
  • Delayed cognition
  • Impaired Emotional regulation

It is applied to adults also. Here habits & Resilience plays a significant part.

Neuroplasticity & Habits:

What you practice, You become. One old say is there,”Practice makes the man Perfect”. The reason behind everything is Neuroplasticity. Same thing to addictive behaviour and recovering from addiction period.

When an individual engages in certain group of behaviours, their brain strengthens the neural pathways associated with that habit.

  • Are you Continuously complaining the life and your circumstances, your neural pathway get strengthened & it becomes your part
  • Are you constantly practice gratitude, your neural pathway get strengthened & it becomes your habit…
  • Are you practicing compassion….

What are you practicing?

Don’t judge yourself immediately!! Self-awareness is vital

Benefits of Neuroplasticity:

  • Recovery from Cerebrovascular accidents like stroke and traumatic brain injury.
  • Enhances Memory abilities and cognitive abilities
  • Effective learning

Tips to improve your Neuroplasticity:

  • Non-dominant hand usage: If you are right handed, use your left hand for your regular activities
  • Learning new things
  • Book reading
  • Dancing
  • Exercise {Both dancing & exercise increase the volume of Hippocampus,an area in brain which reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s disease }
  • Intermittent fasting
  • Adequate sleep
  • Travelling

Note: Multi-tasking never help, because our brain doesn’t have capacity to keep too many things at the same time.
Take away:
Our brain is able to rewire itself based on the experience. This means that all behavioural changes is rely on our brain change to the environment and experiences.
