Mental Health awareness and Self-care

Self-care- first take care of yourself, so that you can able to take care of your loved ones, your family , your society and the entire world. Self-care is the top priority which includes your Physical, Mental, Emotional & Soul Health.

May month is the Mental Health awareness month, additionally after this pandemic, mental health awareness is crucial and many Mental health advocates are creating awareness about this consistently. Applying the lesson is important. This article, I will give a short introduction about our brain performance followed by some self-care tips.

Know your Brain: Are you a Logical personality or Emotional Personality?

Each part of  our body is controlled by our brain, You may know that clot or hemorrhage in the brain {Stroke} causes slurred speech, inability to move the hands etc etc. Likewise, our thinking, emotions and instinct has separate area in brain. I try to tell it in a simple manner,

Frontal lobe, front side of brain deals with thinking, reasoning, logics, decision making , planning.

Limbic system- Amygdala, a part of brain deals with Emotions and its memories.

When you see a threat, your amygdala will perform. When you want to take some elective decisions, your frontal lobe will perform. Frontal lobe also processes your emotions.

When you have a control on yourself, you can able to manage your emotions effectively using your frontal lobe and express yourself in a meaningful manner. People who are having good EQ behave like this.

Why solo performance of amygdala  is not good?

When you see a threat{mild, moderate, severe}, you get afraid{amygdala performance}, it makes you to release stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline in the body in order to protect yourself. Fight or Flight response. The reason behind your rapid heart rate, High BP, shortness of breath or Tachypnea.

If you see a lion coming to you, your amygdala getting activated & you will escape from it by started running or seek help.

But nowadays, these “Threats” are psychological!! Fear of losing job, fear of disease, fear of etc etc… so what will happen? You won’t be rational because your frontal area not activated, only your amygdala is performing which results in irrational performance. Apply the same in this pandemic situation.

Fear of Corona deranges your immune system and you become vulnerable to it. If affected by corona, Amygdala hijacking occurs which aggravate the disease. Stop watching the news channel, they are stimulating your Amygdala.

Persistent performance of amygdala leads to continuous release of your stress hormones which disrupts your entire body’s process and results in many health problems like

Etc..List will go.. so Learning to react to stress in a healthy way is critical. so

Self-compassion

Self-Love- Self-care- Mental & Emotional Health:

Self love is something that you regard and care for your happiness and well-being and not sacrificing your well-being to please others. You put yourself in the first place and which makes you not to depend on others for your happiness.

When you put yourself first, it makes you to encourage to pick good habits and helps you to refrain from things which has an impact on your tranquility.

Few tips:

    1. Act on what you need rather than what you want
    2. Set Healthy boundaries– learn to say “No” to work, love or other things which depletes you Physically, Mentally, Emotionally and Spiritually.
    3. Protect yourself from frenemies. Friend who feel pleasure in your pain is your frenemy.
    4. Be kind to yourself when you did something wrong. Accept Humaness, the fact that you are not perfect.
    5. Listen yourself, what kind of emotions you are carrying and how it impacts your body and mind.
    6. Practice Mindfulness, that is consciously aware of what you are doing, expressing, reciprocating.
    7. Forgive yourself first and forgive others.
    8. Solo dating
    9. Gratitude journal
    10. Exercise
    11. Meditation

Self love gives you greater life satisfaction and moves you to lead a healthy life in a Healthy atmosphere.

Remember:

Self-love doesn’t mean ignoring your own mistakes, It includes Self-blame, Self-acceptance, Forgiveness , learning & moving forward.

These Self-care activities makes you Self-aware which encourages you regulate yourself and ends up in Emotional intelligence process. Understand yourself as a whole and lead yourself.
