Work from home: Health issues & Tips

After this pandemic, Work from Home is new normal to many people all over the world. Work from home has many advantages, similarly disadvantages also there. When certain things are unavoidable, waiting for right time to do our routine work is crazy. Being adaptable is the wisest choice one should make while facing uncertainties.

Health effects due to working from Home:

Work from Home leads to many Physical & Mental Health issues like Obesity, Back Pain, Neck Pain and affects overall Mental & Physical well-being. Unmanaged minor stressors may leads to major impact on Mental & Physical Health. This article, I will discuss about certain factors for taking care of your overall well being.

Mental stress:

Unmanaged minor stressors can leads to severe Mental illness. Giving importance to mental & Emotional health is critical. For stress, many reasons are there, evaluating the reason, exploring the cause and working on its possibilities will definitely help. Problem here, many people are always advocating that their current stress is mainly due to the particular job they are working and resignation is the only choice. But prior to that, focus  possibilities instead of impossibilities to change  for betterment.

1.Monotony:

Tedious repetition and routine, lack of varieties and interest are common during working from Home. Monotony restricts Cognitive Functioning. It occurs even  if you are not tired Mentally & Physically. Our brain improves when there is different surprising stimuli and it is achieved by Changes.

Tips to avoid Monotony:

  • Try to do your routine, differently. If you go for walking regularly, change the area of walking or if you do exercise regularly in one place, change the Location.
  • Self-Competitive:  Compare your work with your previous records. Give time for tracking your performance & learning new skills.
  • Do  things which Challenges you. If you don’t know Cooking, learn and try to cook. Whatever may be the challenge, but do it.
  • Don’t forget to give a separate time for your Hobby. Many people are not aware about their Hobbies. Explore your Fun side too.
  • Educate yourself & Educate others. Share your knowledge with the people surround you. Discuss with them
  • Glam up– When you are working from home, you seldom give importance to your External look. Wear formal dress, change your hairstyle, try new things which enhances your external beauty. Same night dress, uncombed hair, casual look may not surprise you when you do it regularly.

3.Make “work zone at Home”, zoning a place for work in your home helps you to avoid distractions and gives energy which synchronizes with your work.

4.Consistent break is essential, don’t do your work continuously, it deprives your Energy.

5.Distractions:

Distractions are the main reason for the stress. Remember, an unresolved stress ends in burnout.Just be in the moment, identify your distractions and work on it.

  • Turn off all notifications
  • Schedule a time for social media in your phone, not less than every 1 hr.
  • Give separate time exclusively for your family members, so that they can understand and not to disturb you during your working hours.
  • Don’t do Multi-tasking, even though you are skilled. One work at a time increases your productivity and decreases your stress
  • Practice Mindfulness, just consciously do what you are doing.

6.Imposter Syndrome:

Imposter syndrome means you ,yourself doubts your skills, talents or accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a “fraud”. In working from home, this happens due to

  •  lack of in person communication and reassurance from colleagues and seniors
  • Seeing achievements post in social media

What to do?

                                Stop comparing yourself with others

                                 Remind yourself about your strength, qualities

                                 Ask for feedback from your colleagues

                                 Request performance evaluation from your seniors

                                 Remember, Mistakes are not failures!!

Physical Stress:

Mental, Emotional Health & Physical Health are integrated, if you are having disturbances in any one of it, it directly affects the other. Taking care of both Mental & Physical health is critical for your well-being.

8.Obesity due to sedentary life style and food habits. Focus on Exercise and balanced diet helps.

9.Lack of sleep or disturbed sleep results in many major illness. So,Monitor your sleeping time. Practice same time for everyday. Have a 15 mins nap at afternoon.
